APOTHECARY
Amaryllis R. Flowers, 2015
36 in x 60 in
Gouache, tea, watercolor, acrylic, and marker on paper
Before I started making objects I was drawing them. I wanted the drawing to be a blueprint for future objects and performance. I was also curious if themes of a queer femmehood could be communicated without figuration.
Image is of a large-scale drawing on paper, a horizontal scroll to be viewed like a map. Ritualistic weapons and tools for divination are unearthed and lined up against a brown background like an archeological dig. Swords, daggers, hatchets, staffs, dousing rods, bones, daisies, and other objects are painted in candy colors and wildly adorned with eyeballs, teeth, gems, crescent moons, and other symbols of belonging.
